However, it is important that you have your numerical address visible so that emergency vehicles responding to your aid will be able to reach the scene in a timely manner. In most areas the numerical addresses for each building should be at least 3 inches in height and readily visible from the roadway. If it also helpful if the numbers are reflective so they’re visible at night. By posting your home or business numbers you will be helping us help you without unnecessary delays.

The Cañon City Fire District serves approximately 35,000 people in Cañon City and portions of the surrounding unincorporated Fremont County area.

Located on the edge of the Arkansas Valley approximately 40 miles west of Pueblo and less than an hour southwest of Colorado Springs, this growing combination career/volunteer fire suppression district responds to over 2,200 calls annually and operates out of two staffed stations with an operating budget of over 2.5 million dollars.

Fire Chief

Opening Date: June 23, 2010

Closing Date: August 31, 2010

Salary:
$79,008.00 – $83,484.00 plus benefits

Duties:
1. Plans, directs, supervises, and reviews activities of salaried and volunteer firefighting personnel performing fire inspection, fire prevention, fire/arson investigations, and firefighting.

2. Makes recommendations to the Board in matters of need for personnel, apparatus, and equipment.

3. Initiates and advises on the development of ordinances, laws, and regulations.

4. Supervises promotional examinations.

5. Directs and oversees District training programs.

6. Prepares and administers the Fire District budget.

7. Submits monthly and annual reports to the Board.

8. Attends meetings relative to Fire District involvement.

9. Responds to major alarms when off duty.

10. Oversees hydrant locations, fire code plan reviews, and all matters relevant to subdivision reviews.

11. Manages positions and personnel of the District; counsels employees and administers discipline; enforces District personnel policies and procedures within the District.

Essential Functions:
1. The Fire Chief operates under the direction of the Board to administer the Fire District and all policies relevant to the daily operation of such.

2. Plans and directs the Fire District in all aspects of fire, EMS, hazardous materials, and specialized rescue in the protection of life and property.

3. Develops programs consistent with the good and orderly operation of the Fire District in those areas deemed emergency as well as those deemed non-emergency.

4. Insures that the Board and public are aware of conditions that, in his/her opinion, are unsafe or difficult or impossible to protect.

Requirements:
1. Must have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with coursework or equivalent in fire science, public administration management or related areas, and at least 11 years of progressively responsible experience in the fire service. At least 5 of those 11 years must be in a supervisory or administrative role. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Examples of satisfactory substitution would be an Associate's Degree in fire science, public administration management or related areas, and 13 years of fire service, with at least 5 of those 13 years in a supervisory or administrative role. Another example of a qualified substitution would be 15 years of service in a fire department, with progressively responsible experience, and 5 of those 15 years in a supervisory or administrative role.

2. Must have proven managerial skills, budgeting experience, and human resources skills.

3. Is currently, or has held the minimum following certifications: Firefighter I, EMT-B, and Hazardous Materials Operations Level.

4. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
